Interstate 70 Construction Zone Fatality involving 2 Semis in Clay County, Indiana

We are about 3 weeks into the 100 deadliest days of the summer on Indiana’s roads and yet another crash involving two semis on Interstate 70 has claimed a life.  WTHR noted that an INDOT alert reported that two semis were involved in a crash around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, June 28, 2022 near Brazil, Indiana.  According to the Indiana State Police, the crash happened in the westbound lanes at the 26-mile marker in Clay County.  Traffic had to be diverted in both directions.  It was reported that one of the semis caught fire and that the cleanup was going to be extensive.  While all the details of this crash were not available at the time of the news article this morning, one of the photos that was shared by a witness appears to show construction cones in the area where the crash occurred.  Preliminary data shows that work zone crashes and fatalities are on the rise across the state of Indiana.

Work Zone Crashes Facts

According to the Indiana Department of Labor’s website:

  • The three major reasons for work zone crashes are following too closely, speeding, and inattentive driving.
  • Areas, where traffic is entering or leaving the work zone, are the most dangerous.
  • The difference between driving 65 MPH and 45 MPH through a two-mile work zone is only ONE MINUTE. Don’t risk a life to save a minute!
